Such a good concept for a film, but it fell flat. Fargeat seemed more focused on the visual execution than the plot or characters. The world was too stripped back and simplistic making the concept unbelievable and the film boring to watch.
I think most of the issues stem from the film’s exposition, which then doesn’t allow the rest of the film to succeed. It’s hard to believe all her self-worth has been put into a morning work out show…
I totally loved this slice of life portrait of a small art college in Oregon. Lizzy is a sculptor living in her parents’ and even brother’s shadow. We get the sense she won’t really amount to anything as she is her own worst enemy. There is always a distraction to pull her away from the greatness she might be capable of. But the goal is not to get somewhere, it’s just to be here.

Sciamma just gets it. Love her films, this one now included. She’s so good at tension and exploring the messiness of growing up, sexuality, and identity.
