What is it that elevates this rom-com above so many of its genre peers? Is it the performances? The economy of its scenes? The brevity? All these, yes. But even more: it’s its honesty.
Potentially gutting and unnerving, were its characters even remotely sympathetic. A lot is at play here which works—the sporadic, seemingly unscripted nature of the performances, the skull-bludgeoning violence, the strange verve in its pacing, the bleak and unflinching collision between domestic life and criminal life. It’s also a story best experienced knowing as little as possible beforehand. But the cinéma vérité style, while at times excellent in its staging, feels lazy and muddled.
