A movie with only three real characters that feels bigger (emotionally, geographically, creatively) than anything else I’ve seen this year whatever the budget. Celine Song affords each space to be human without an ounce of judgement. No good people or bad people, just people.

How refreshing to see a smart, adult film that isn’t nihilistic, grief-bound, or provocative. I love those sorts of films in moderation but something this joyful and passionate (that doesn’t drift into shallow sweetness) feels so rare.

I hope this means Celine Songs plays will get staged more across the country!!!

A UFO. And beautiful people saying extremely clever lines. And…

We’re all going to die one day, and nobody wants to talk about it. Partly because, what a bummer! And partly because, how do you unspool the meaning of life without sounding like either a salvia-stoned college freshman or a nondenominational self help book?

I wanted to read everything about this film the second the credits finished, so I felt especially lucky when Ethan Herisse stepped on stage and gave one of the best post-film Q&As I’ve seen. What an incredible person. Thoughtful, kind, funny, and uncommonly transparent about the creative process.

Hard to say what I disliked most:

    The inconsistent and ever-changing rules
    The vacant metaphor
The millennial “we live in a hell world” philosophy
Or the butt rock credits song

I think the creators meant well with their depiction of autism, but what a fucking whiff. Minor spoilers: That the demonic possession rules apply the same for neurotypical people and animals but not an autistic teenager because their brain is some sort of trap … I mean, come on.

No scares. No tension. No internal logic. And worst of all, no humans. How am I supposed to care about anyone when every character acts like they’ve just landed on planet Earth? The dolls had more relatable interiority.

I know we’re all afraid of AI breaking into the film industry and bludgeoning us with incoherent pastiche of cinematic classics, but between this and MaXXXine I fear the killer may be calling from inside the house.

And for real: We can’t keep mistaking the number of aspect ratios for the number of stars a film gets
