This movie is almost too much Studio Ghibli. Like they tried cramming Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, and Princess Mononoke to make an ultimate Miyazaki goodbye party. Is The Grand Uncle symbolic for Miyazakis life, probably. Such a fun watch though, and obviously beautiful like all Ghibli films.
I originally viewed this film when I was about 12 — maybe 11 — and I thought, “why did Pedro just kill an innocent chicken?” I just recently watched it again for my IB Film Comparative Study so I really got to go in depth, and I think Luis Buñuel is just amazing.
