The year's most rousing and disastrous spectacle also happens to be an absolute riot. The Room is funny because it's dumb. Megalopolis is funny because the same generational talent who conceived Apocalypse Now somehow believes that any part of this constitutes his best, most creative effort.

"Nothing is so terrible as a pretentious movie. I mean a movie that aspires for something really terrific and doesn’t pull it off is shit, it’s scum… and everyone will walk on it as such." - Francis Ford Coppola

I was scrolling through letterboxd one morning — as one does. Cinema is so dead.

    Who edited this?

    Who wrote this trash?

    Genuinely, what the fuck?

Is this the same man who delivered us Knives Out?

    WHAT IS THIS THING???

Victim films are terrible to review. They come from a humanitarian perspective but are inherently torture-porn and a narrative non-starter. Criticizing them makes me feel like a right-wing asshole who can't open up his heart.

But I love good stories, and unfortunately, subjecting characters to constant violence doesn't do a thing. It turns identifiable victims into screaming meat bags. The narrative drive is not what they do, but what will happen to them. This can be engaging, but only if the…
