This brought to mind Chris Morris’ Jam, which plumbs the depths of disturbing subject matter and manages to distill plenty of pitch-black humour from taboo situations. The Coffee Table could have benefited from a more assured hand in the vein of Morris’ to guide it; its tonal misjudgements make it feel like a parody of the boundary-pushing cinematic extremity that it actually wants to be.

Lions for Lambs 2007
Tom Cruise needs to RUN like you and I need oxygen. It’s what drives his soul. Robert Redford saddled him to a chair throughout this entire movie. His first mistake. Dry as toast.
