Strawberry Fields 1997
There's the 90s cinematography where everyone has to run somewhere.
There's the 90s music.
There's so many 90s independent film things.
This movie really, really establishes itself past those 90s things, though. The care for the characters, the genuine anguish, the desire that riffs on New Wave but doesn't disappear into it.
This is a movie about life, that wants to understand a particular life, that draws on experience. It's really cool.

The Ward 2010
I've been a The Ward defender since i first watched it in 2011.
11 years later: I've been wrong this whole time. There are some really great shots in the front third, alternating high and low angles that are compelling. The music works like, once.
Compared to Sucker Punch, though, it's a masterpiece, I guess.

Sarasota Half in Dream 2017
A surprisingly lovely documentary about Sarasota's liminal spaces, its nature and decay. It has the joys of a student project - you can sometimes hear the narrator smile when they are reading their lines, which I found incredibly endearing - and some excellent visuals. Citations of the Situationist International and Andre Breton are also endearing, and put to good use.

First Reformed 2017
I went in expecting something a little more glacial, if not in development than in composition. From that perspective, First Reformed barely lingered. Every moment that seemed destined to stretch and find itself in reflection or interiority was instead interrupted by voiceover or a cut.
