    This is a film that I both love and am intensely frustrated by.

    On one hand, I love seeing Scorsese using film to gush about movies. The plot line with George Melies, one of the first great filmmakers, is so heartfelt and anytime the story is focused on it I was fully engaged.     While far from his upper echelon, this might be one of the most interesting films for me to think about thus far in Spielberg’s filmography.

    One of the reasons why Spielberg is such a masterful director is that he is able to produce films that both carry intense whimsy and sentiment while also dealing with very heavy subjects and drama.     I was really surprised at how well this movie was able to pull off its concept. I was worried it would lean too hard into the comedy and do a disservice to the period it is portraying but it’s actually very tastefully done.
