This is a film that I both love and am intensely frustrated by.
On one hand, I love seeing Scorsese using film to gush about movies. While far from his upper echelon, this might be one of the most interesting films for me to think about thus far in Spielberg’s filmography.
One of the reasons why Spielberg is such a masterful director is that he is able to produce films that both carry intense whimsy and sentiment while also dealing with very heavy subjects and drama. Naturally, it took him time to fully develop these skills and this film showcases that for better and worse.

I was really surprised at how well this movie was able to pull off its concept. I was worried it would lean too hard into the comedy and do a disservice to the period it is portraying but it’s actually very tastefully done.
This is a pretty powerful story about overcoming prejudices and fanaticism. The humor, which slowly fades, though never completely disappears, as the story goes on is primarily used to highlight the ridiculousness of Nazi beliefs and protocol.…
