I see what they were trying to do with this— and Sasheer Zamata deserves better, the whole cast does—but this did not land at all with me. I'd love for this to be the Black acerbic, awkward millennial rom com that it's trying to be, but the writing was just not strong enough. The editing wasn't great either. I didn't hate it! Slightly more interesting than expected.
The discomfort caused by Jim Carrey's weirdness is a testament of how solid his performance is. People just weren't ready for Jim Carrey's insanity to have a dark edge to him.
Ben Stiller was trying interesting things as a director. The satire may be a bit little shallow or uneven, but there was something there people weren't ready for when it came out.

Feel bad movie of the year, in a good way. Alternate title: "The Brutalist." The upside is that I feel slightly less concerned about my own anxiety in comparison to Pansy's. You may need a cuddle or weighted blanket or a drink afterwards.
