This film encapsulated a lot of feelings for me. It captured moments that are deeply true and things I’d never thought I could consider universal or something that others could relate with. In several moments, the audience didn’t get a break. We were just punched in the gut as the story continued on. Other times, like at the end, the film bookended itself. As Awkwafina leaves, she sees everything she first saw when she left. This is one of the first times we’re given a moment to process and it hits hard. This was really beautifully done.

This felt like a high production value play-by-play of the film school experience in the worst way possible. This was an hour too long. In the beginning of the film, the main character Julie is asked why she is choosing to make a narrative instead of a documentary. If she wanted to make the characters true to life, why not make a documentary? I think this is a question the director should’ve asked herself about her own autobiographical film. Perhaps if she had made a documentary instead of what turned out to be an unsuccessful narrative, she might have evoked more feeling.
