The last scene is one of the best (and perhaps most prescient) of the ‘90s. New to me on this rewatch: Christof’s compassionate-but-brutal conservatism, which feels of an incredibly different time.

Traffic 2000
What is the best stretch a movie director has ever had? I usually nominate John McTiernan for the trio of PREDATOR / DIE HARD/ HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, but Steven Soderbergh deserves to be in the conversation for ERIN BROCKOVICH / TRAFFIC / OCEAN’S ELEVEN (with possible extended consideration for OUT OF SIGHT / THE LIMEY before that). TRAFFIC might have aged in some specifics more poorly than those other films, but at its best, it’s an incredibly effecting character-based look at a complex issue. Erika Christensen’s performance continues to haunt me 25 years later.

I watched this at a drive-in covered by puppies and a shitty portable radio and still had a blast. If I was a kid I would be obsessed.

Galaxy Quest 1999
I’ve been reading Alan Rickman’s diaries, and I was struck that he noted that GALAXY QUEST has a real innocence to it. Rewatching it last night, it’s a really remarkable achievement for the way it gently mocks and yet remains totally in love with the thing it’s aping. A really strong script that’s elevated by some terrific actors. I love this movie.
