Succeeds in some tender moments between characters, but hangs its hat on wacky comedy which fell completely flat for me here. The only good gag is about a brick. Politically, it’s about the lowest grade of satire.

Quite a nice film, using a witty brand of gore to gently put across a strong message about everyone’s favourite subject — death. It’s decked out in the particular, kinda self consciously zany comic tone that’s rampant at the moment.

It’s gory but not nasty, which I appreciate.

Suspenseful and affecting [I shed a tear], I enjoyed the fun experimental use of the camera for storytelling. Performances: genuine and touching from the dad and daughter, decent from the other kid, some others a bit wooden perhaps.

    ★★½

With a few decent laughs and a plot that was mostly entertaining, I enjoyed it reasonably enough, but the current Marvel moviegoing experience, as with Pixar, is crossing your fingers for a return to past highs and coming away not quite satisfied — also, a lot of the movie is dominated by gay-based humour which, even sensing that Renolds’s intentions are strongly LGBT-affectionate, felt a touch misjudged at times — the archetype we deserve for Deadpool is that of a sexy pansexual rogue, to which ideal a smattering of bum closeups and innuendo don’t do justice.
