A Single Man 2009
I picked up Isherwood’s ‘A Single Man’ at the start of the year and it affected me wholly. Somehow Isherwood was able to put to words feelings and understandings that I felt were completely caged and unapproachable in terms of even attempting to express. Tom Ford does the same here, clearly a man with an eye for detail, he summoned something toweringly gorgeous and honest from Firth here, recounting the life of George in looks - who could understand that concept…

Letter to My Mother for My Son 2022
Having returned from the Barbican Re/sisters exhibition today, which beautifully represented the relationship between gender and ecology and the systemic links between female oppression and the deterioration of the planet, I was drawn back to the experience of watching this film. I was willing to observe (or re-observe) the filmic yet tranquil language of one of my favourite contemporary directors. Did not disappoint.
