I had a good time! It's no secret the movie is overly beholden to its predecessors, has a thinly written cast, makes a silly choice for CGI character recreation, and otherwise isn't confident enough to stand on its own artistically. BUT David Jonsson is fantastic, the atmosphere is sustained, and I liked this way more than I expected to. Schlocky and derivative, yes, but fun.

    ACAB: the movie.

Overall a great return for Jeremy Saulnier, and probably my second favorite of his after Green Room. Beautifully shot with fine performances throughout, Rebel Ridge is a real treat of a film, and exactly because it's the type of movie that is so rarely made anymore: a mid-budget, serious-minded movie for adults. Opening with Number of the Beast let's you know you're in for a good time right off the bat. Aaron Pierre has the juice.

Someday Brandon Cronenberg may be a very good filmmaker. He's certainly shown promise; I thought Possessor was genuinely quite strong. But being the son of a great filmmaker doesn't in and of itself confer greatness. Infinity Pool started with a promising concept that deteriorated rapidly into unfocused, half-baked silliness showing just how far B. Cronenberg has yet to go. I so badly wanted to like this.
