Awesome cinematography by Cuarón and some beautiful oners but the “climax” of the movie is really stupid and fails to tie all the different slice-of-life subplots together in a believable way.
Though I don’t love either film, this and the recent Oscar winner I’m Still Here make a fascinating pair. Both are stories of upper-middle class mothers in 1970 Latin America attempting to maintain domestic normalcy without their husbands amidst political turmoil. The perspectives, though, differentiate the films entirely.
