In 2015 I watched Cleo From 5 to 7 for the first time. I spent the next four years attempting to replicate the “Sans Toi” scene in my work. It put a spell on me.
I’ve found my new Sans Toi scene.

I did a guest lecturer at another uni today where I basically had to teach them all of cinema, and so I played them this.
It’s crazy how much I fucking love this film despite it not being something I’d ever put on while alone at home. But to play it with a group and to discuss how broad the possibilities of cinema are… it gives me life! I marvel at this picture.
I genuinely think this film is evil, especially because it's intended for a younger audience.
Edit: I'm very fond of Anne Hathaway's intentionally silly eye and nose movements.
“I cried about 4 times, weeping after one scene and another” - Hikari Mitsushima
“I thought the script was an insult to God” - Mami Nakamura
The actors’ reactions to the script summarize the film quite perfectly.
It’s exciting to see how few people were on set and how simple the setups are given that this is such a monumental film. I’m a little disappointed to see Sono’s harsh treatment of Mitsushima on set though.
Worth checking out if you’re a fan of the film.
