Tar was a fascinating film on multiple levels. Technically, it is near flawless, with the sound design, score, editing and cinematography all outstanding. Performance wise, Cate Blanchett gives one of the finest performances of her career, a force unleashed as the film slowly builds to it's climax. It was fairly intense and well acted, with solid production values and special effects.  But The Wolf Man is trying to say something that was never quite clear to me. I did like that they were ambitiously trying something different than just a typical werewolf story, but it wasn’t clear enough to me what that was for it to really resonate. I felt like it never fully established relationships before trying to say something about them.

Flawed, but Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington never disappoint.  Crowe in particular plays the unhinged virtual killer SID6.7 with ferocity. The story feels a bit rushed and it’s never exactly clear why Denzel is the only man who can bring down Crowe. It’s all sort of contrived, and a lot of the motivations don’t make a ton of sense but the payoff is worth it. The third act feels a bit rushed, but overall both of these actors carry the film quite well and it’s ambition makes it worth watching.

It’s probably because I just watched Robert Eggers masterful version, but I was far less impressed with Herzogs adaptation than its reputation. It’s not that I didn’t like it, it’s just that elements of it are far less impressive to me than the original, or the 2024 version.

I thought the cast was fairly solid, and Klaus Kinski is often singled out for praise. I enjoyed him, but his depiction was far less captivating imo than either Max Schreck or…
