The Joy Luck Club 1993
I respect that this movie has been a source of representation for so many but the depiction of China and Chinese heritage seems to me as one of shame and bitterness rooted in sinophobic stereotypes.
The movie seems insistent on depicting China through only histories of domestic abuse, poverty, and the objectification of women. This is a fabricated reality where everyone speaks in proverbs and every single flashback feels like their purpose is only to perpetuate and reinforce negative stereotypes.…
