Hairspray 2007
one of the best musicals to come from the early 2000’s. heavy on the historical context this musical is more then just a fun shiny trip to the early 60’s. it does heavy heavy lifting especially culturally as it paints a stark reality of america as it was at this time.
but the story is only one part of a extravagant dancing singing spectacle that not only reaffirms superb casting choices but also sets a new standard for hollywood adaptations. the message is the high water mark on an absolutely blockbuster production that everyone, regardless of age, needs to see.
