I loved this movie. I know, I know. But hear me out.

    First, some background...

I love movies. Like LOVE movies. Growing up, I was always happy to sit quietly in front of a TV and watch stories come to life. Any story. I was just as captivated by The Boy Who Could Fly as I was by Invaders From Mars.

But something happened when I saw The Crow (1994). It released on VHS the day before my 11th birthday.…

Def liked this one. Despite its shortcomings, it was definitely a modern epic saga that fit right in with the franchise post Fury Road.

But seriously, a handful of CGI shots were atrocious and took me out of it. Seriously, someone getting on a horse or walking down a sand hill shouldn’t look that bad.

Halloween is the perfect modern slasher for today. The film is brutal and unnerving during its time spent with Michael and Laurie, but is balanced out with its humor (not surprising considering the writing talent) and, even more shocking, its drama. A beautifully made labour of love, evident immediately from the opening credits, elevated throughout with Carpenter's updated score, and finalized during a third act that over-delivers. While today's pop-horror is mostly filled with entertaining supernatural setups, this film made one guy with a knife fucking scary again. I'm in love. Will return for repeat viewings during it's theatrical run.
