Seems this is what happens when a well-meaning indie film walks down a dark alley and gets mugged by a mean looking dude called Joe Hollywood who's wearing a big MOTR patch on the back of his patent leather jacket.

Yes, this is a film about cricket. Yes, it has singing and dancing. And yes, when the village cripple walked into bat at no.11 with only a handful of runs needed, a tear nearly sprang from my eye.

Astounding. Magnificent. Also quite long. Deservedly Best Actor at Cannes. Admittedly some people don't like it but they're nuts.

The late Portuguese art-house director João César Monteiro also takes the lead role as 'João de Deus' in this perverse and perverted film about an ice-cream maker/pubic hair collector/horny septuagenarian. And with a character like that it's hard to go wrong.

I must have seen this film about 15 yrs ago and certain scenes still live strong in my mind. Even more memorable due to the dodgy subtitles that accompanied the print I saw, I can highly recommend you do not take your mother to see this.

Not that I did that of course.
