  A lot of little nods and refs to some all time classics, but cribs most directly from Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream, including its subject matter, visual style, editing, and absolutely the hallmark sledgehammer subtlety.

  To its credit, The Substance does have a morbid sense of humor that left me laughing in disbelief at a lot of the bananas third act, as opposed to being totally shell shocked, but the hyperglossy LA satire and illogical premise didn't totally work either.

  Definitely a watch it once and never again, can’t recommend to normies kind of film too, but respect for the commitment to the bit.
