  this film is neither about trans and queer people, nor it is about rodeos, horses, cowboys, community, solidarity, ecology or even joy
  it's got no nuance, no character personality, no complexity in their relations - that polycule commune isn't afforded any kind of humanity really. I mean all these years of fighting toxic cisheteronormativity and we end up with transfem bella swan and her nasty edward cullen chaser like really?

  on top of that, it's legit pretty racist, classist, overflowing…

  i mean this is infinitely poetic
  my fav things are the stillness, the pace, the cinematography and most importantly the writing: each interaction is written so purposefully, the way a very good novel does
  my reservations are to do with how manipulative a film like yi yi can be (cos it's so good) - it isn't perfect, i really feel that some characters are afforded more inner lives than others and surprise surprise the teenage daughter only exists through her desire for others' approval.
  having said that it's one of the best thing ive ever seen
