Now that was a movie.
- First hour felt like Red Dead Redemption 3
- Color grading, set design, and cinematography was all *chefs kiss*. Every setting felt real and lived in.
- No wasted time on pacing which is incredible for a 3-and-a-half hour movie
- Leo and Gladstone nailed it
- I want more Robert De Niro in old-timey driving goggles
Did come away wishing we had more insight into Mollie’s side of things. Felt hard to believe that she wouldn’t have started putting two and two together sooner than she does and that King Hale’s 24/7 benevolence wouldn’t raise sooner suspicion.
A beautifully orchestrated film.
Quick thoughts:
- You’ve gotta book out a solid day or two to get through this thing. First half is much stronger than the second.
- Some of the first half desert shots and scenes with the larger group of extras just blew me away. They don’t make movies like this anymore.
- Alec Guinness in blackface is something…I guess you have to look past it? 😬 His actual performance is great.
- Same goes for the Bechdel Test; this movie most assuredly does not pass it.
- The score is 10/10 and iconic.
