Babylon 1980
The camera shows us an unflattering and unadorned picture of Brixton, a year before rioting truly broke out there yet acutely aware of the rising tension. “This is my home, and it’s never been fucking lovely”. The music shows us a different view, weaving through the movie’s diegetic sound and sometimes deliberately syncing with action on screen as the spirit of reggae permeates moments of intimacy. When the music fades, the hate takes over and we see the violent reality of these surroundings and its groups tearing themselves apart.
