Absolutely immense soundscape, breathtaking action sequences, beautifully shot and dynamic stills, with a script that does justice to and adds depth to Herbert's themes around weaponized fanaticism. While Part 2 improves upon Part 1, pacing remains a big issue where it simultaneously does not have enough time to adequately explore the political intrigue and "plans within plans" of the characters but yet still feels slow and confusing in the middle third.
I'm going to be real, I'm still trying to figure out what exactly happened in this film, but dear God is it pretty. Without a doubt the most beautiful film I've ever seen. The transitions and editing is so smooth and does dreamlike surrealism better and more tastefully than anything I've ever seen. Visual equivalent of a Russian novel...and just like one I'm still not totally clear who's who but im here for the ride...
Ultraviolent, sexy neon romp + daddy issues. The David Lynch worship is a little over the top and there isn't a whole ton of substance but it's fun for what it is
It's clear Villeneuve has a deep appreciation for the source material and the deviations he does make really keep to the spirit of the text while building off the themes (e.g. the Jamis subplot). The movie does a fantastic job at world building and creating an aura of hostility and foreboding.
However in trying to keep faithful to the text he tries to get a LOT of exposition into the first half which causes the pacing to feel glacial while…
