More into if a film is interesting than necessarily good.
It's good, but also disappointing to me that unlike Baker's other films, every character is more or less the stereotype we'd expect. Madison is great, but Ani definitely feels more like a movie sex worker than a real one. Weirdly compared to Baker's prior films, this film really doesn't inquire into sex work as labour.
The plot is cliche, but some things are cliches for a reason. I loved this film's small observations, the subtle set design which looks more like the seventies I see in my parents' old photos than the seventies Hollywood portrays, and the beautiful film grain look. Legit some of the most beautiful shots of the year.
Giamatti threads the needle of playing this teacher realistically (I've met guys like him) yet transforming him enough to be likeable without feeling unrealistic.
