Wiseman often focuses on not just the performative nature of court, but more interestingly on the performative and condescending way adults in their various roles of authority speak to children. More than anything, he shows the outsized amount of power held by the state in determining the future of these kids, mostly done without talking to them, and usually in their absence.
A more tightly focused and repetitive Wiseman film that appreciates focus and repetition. The sounds of the movie will likely stay in my head longer than the (beautiful) images.
