One of the greatest directorial debuts of all time. It's insane how Eggers masters his distinct aesthetic and style right from the get go and on a 4 million dollar budget. One thing I picked up on during this viewing is how the natural lighting and candlelit interior lighting is straight up Barry Lyndon worship, there are many shots where you can pause the movie and it looks like a painting. Again, holy shit that 4 million dollar budget!

The aura this movie has is truly something else. Right from the opening credits when Mary is in the kitchen and gets lost in a trance while looking at the snow falling through the window pane strikes so much emotional weight without a word of dialogue (same with the scene when she's at her sisters house holding her son's baby shoes). A year later and I'm pretty sure this is a contender for my favourite movie at this point
Also, Paul Giammati the fucking GOAT. "You are and always have been penis cancer in human form" is legit one of the hardest lines ever dropped
