As others have succinctly put it: “Bogan Cronenberg”.
This movie is all fucking over the place. It started off strong but it became disjointed pretty quickly. Aside from that, the amateur soundtrack and special effects get an A+ (including the stellar theme song for the end credits with only two lyrics which are whispering “give it to me baby” and screaming “BODY MELT” over and over a 90s techno dance beat). And it is pretty funny at times.
The gore…
The cinematography is actually amazing, it deserves all the praise it gets for that. The soundtrack is also amazing. But otherwise, everything is cliche, corny millennial bullshit. Yet another early 2010s horror movie where you cringe the entire time because the dialogue, the relationship dynamics, and the characters' presentation are all so fucking twee and predictable. That makes it annoying to watch, but almost all media is like that these days anyway.
I have my complaints, but in the end…
The historical commentary tied it all together- I think the scene where Gishiro dies and drags the Japanese and American flags down with him was pretty important in that respect
Snow falls in the beginning when she’s born- and her mother dies- and snow falls when she kills the final remaining villain. Symbolic of the death of who she was, now that she’s fulfilled her life’s purpose.
Serves its purpose as cheap horror entertainment but if you’re acting like this is Real Cinema just because of the tanning bed-coffin scene I think you need to go back to literature class. It’s not a good movie, it’s a fun movie, and I only watched it because Pinterest promised me a goth boy but I got a dollar store JD from heathers with 2 minutes of screentime anyway. Also expect general misogynistic garbage where the female characters are concerned.
