Day of the Dead 1985
As with all George Romero "...of the Dead" movies, it's not really about zombies. All of the movies, to different degrees, are about "who are the monsters?"
Here at the natural, and bleakest, conclusion of the series that question is stretched to its most extreme, so much so that the monsters are rational and the humans are monsters! Get it! Sure, there's not a lot of nuance but this isn't high literature, y'know?

This hit me right in the gut! I am projecting but I suspect the difference in 4 star and 5 star reviews may lie with the reviewers' relationship with their parents. "Good", relatively uncomplicated = 4 stars; more complicated = 5 stars.
That's a very broad, unfair generalization but it is at the heart of my rating. Without my own baggage, this is a beautiful, quiet film driven by truly blockbuster performances by Paul Mescal and especially Frankie Corio. And…

Kind of all over the place! It's pretty much a pastiche of the dark satire of class from Snowpiercer, the environmentalism of Okja and The Host, with a little broad liberal wish fulfillment.
Robert Pattinson and Naomi Ackie are great, I found Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo to be too cartoonish to be funny (see liberal wish fulfillment above), their performances seemed aimed squarely at the tastes of your liberal meme-sharing aunt on Facebook.
The pastiche means it has to cover a LOT of ground so it definitely drags, and is a bit too unfocused to be truly effective.

Inherent Vice 2014
Pound for pound one of the best book-to-film adaptations of all time. The befuddled, stoned, wandering pace exactly matches how I felt reading the book. It’s also beautiful to look at, great needle drops, and Joanna Newsom! What more do you need?
