    Where to start…

All the music shit was shit. All the dancing was shit. The fact that this was in an arena was shit.

This could have worked if it was heavily scaled back, and done in a small venue. Make it 45 minutes, an opening monologue, a few sketches, a couple multimedia bits (interacting with the video), the end.

Putting Alan in an arena setting was awful. Even seeing a rock band in an arena is shitty, so why…

Perfect slice of Americana. Niche competition in rural Texas, plenty of drama, competition, and character study to make this a worthy film for the canon of American weirdos. I wish I held the world record for holding 8 rattle snakes by the tail in my mouth.

Best bit: snake bite triage in a trailer, one first timer getting venom extracted from his hand and 3 guys smoking cigarettes saying “ah he’ll be fine enough to compete the next round.”

Vapid, young, good looking, white, gay, wealthy men, that are in the arts and culture scene in NYC struggling... for some reason... NO ONE CARES ABOUT THAT. holy shit. I had no sympathy for any of these completely shallow characters (all of which I think were based off of the writer/director himself) in fact, I came to resent every single one of them. Spoiled, overly dramatic and one dimensional, none of the characters are remarkable except for the fact that…

While rough around the edges, tech wise, this is a pristine portrayal of rural America on its surface while just below being a beautiful and funny snap shot at the spirit of 90s America. Even as our values and ethics change as a nation, we see difficulty erodes ego, and nothing is as strong at our cores as the value of the old college try. You could take an anti-capitalist view of the game-show, promotional aspects of the competition as a whole, but what is left at the end are genuine human experiences caught on camera and it’s dang adorable.
