Finally getting around to watching this one.
Is the pursuit of perfection worth your mental health, relationships, and self esteem? Or is that a false bargain; a kind of individualistic mythology that perpetuates and excuses toxic work culture, narcissism, and disregard for other people?
I don’t think Whiplash actually answers the question. But I know where I land.
Predictable coming-together story but overall a fine movie. Kieran just sorta came off as an asshole—like Roman Roy in an alternate universe. Was I supposed to find him insightful?
This was a slow, plodding movie that wanted to say something profound but it never quite arrived. Moodiness, dark lighting and slow dialogue do not create meaning. There was supposed to be a critique of materialism and success, but it got lost in a sort of mean dressing down of a chef who operates a thriving restaurant. There was supposed to be some sort of meditation on loss, but it never rose above cliche.

Go into this with the same mindset that you’d take to the Room, and you’ll have a fantastic time. Best bad movie I’ve seen in awhile.
