    The Night Listener

    ★★★

It’s always nice to see an icy, slow burn thriller with Hitchcockian undertones, but unfortunately The Night Listener is a missed opportunity. The story is lean, taut and hooks you in rather immediately, with an eerie foreboding tone permeating the entire piece and fantastic performances too; but it never really amounts to much, and goes in circles far too often. Just when you think the movie will take a step in an interesting direction, it takes two steps back instead, eventually fizzling out to an unsatisfying conclusion.

A Twilight Zone-esque midlife crisis fairy tale journey into 1969 Hollywood that focuses on the questions based around self-preservation, legacy and goals of fame along with retaining a fun tone and great visual aesthetic throughout. Although Tarantino likes to focus on his characters this is the first film which he has made that I could describe as a character-study. Unlike most European/Asian filmmakers whom he refrences (ie. Goddard and Suzuki) or certain pieces of shot composition…

    Nuclear Now

    ★★★★

Like most reasonable people whenever I hear the words “Nuclear Power” the first thing that usually comes to mind is the three-eyed fish from The Simpsons. That being said, I went in with an open mind and was thoroughly engaged. I was uncertain about weather or not nuclear energy will be the true solution to global warming, as only time will tell, and this form of energy does carry with it some baggage (both figuratively and literally), but by the…
