A tale of hubris, “The Fountain” obscures its relatively simple plot through some initially confusing chronology, making it seem on the surface far more nuanced than it feels in the end. I don’t think there’s anything here that’s particularly astounding, the film’s usage of religion superficial and its emotional beats all quite hollow for me. I did still enjoy some of the ideas at play here, along with the repeated visual with the tree and how the saga concludes.

Simon Stålenhag’s “The Electric State” is one of the most interesting pieces of independent sci-fi published in quite some time. Its visuals, really the core of the entire thing, are so atmospheric, at times grim and at others so dissonantly childish.
