It is at times a compelling post-war drama with stunning visuals and a keen awareness of the abhorrent plight of mid-century Jewish immigrants. It is also at times a bloated, hollow, gratuitous mess that I felt failed to resolve anything in a meaningful way. Felicity Jones was quite good and anchored the film well enough. It is a delight to look at, though, as the photography, set and costume design, and sound mixing are all stellar. Dickie Moltisanti bumps it up a half star.

Gladiator II 2024
I don't know why I'm surprised by how good Denzel is in almost everything he touches. He elevates the material in this film, and the result is an exciting and violent epic about glory, revenge, and triumph. Certainly worthy of its predecessor, and certainly worth seeing on the big screen.

Filmmaking doesn't get much better than this. It's visually stunning, brilliantly crafted, and superbly well-acted. It stands up to anything in the canon of the world's greatest films, and is undoubtedly a top three film of the 1990s, and may well be the very best.

The Many Saints of Newark 2021
I'm a lot nicer to this film than I should be. Vera Farmiga was great for what she had to work with. David Chase struck gold once, but this was just sad and painful at times. RIP to Ray Liotta though, who was awful in one of the two roles he played.
