Civil War 2024
Well color me pleasantly surprised! I threw this on HBO while I made dinner, kind of expecting it to stink, but it might now be my favorite Garland movie? It's definitely got the most round characters he's ever written, is visually very nice (at times poetic, even), and contains several scenes that I found brutally effective. Everything Everywhere All at Once 2022
Really torn because, on the one hand, sweet, dumb, high-concept stuff is usually my jam, but, on the other hand, this movie is a mess—and not in a way that ever complicates its very black-and-white world view. Some of the jokes were funny (most definitely weren't) some of the emotional moments hit (but mostly by relying on incredibly familiar tropes to do the heavy lifting) and, yeah, it's visually engaging. Definitely not as clever or actually even as weird as it thinks it is. It's just ok!

Crossing Delancey 1988
Very effective; really took me all the way from “fuck this pickle man,” to “fuck this pickle man, please!”
