Children Who Chase Lost Voices is seemingly obsessed with the aesthetics of Hayao Miyazaki's work, the film can't go 5 minutes without showing you a visual you've already seen or a string of piano notes you've already heard; after a certain point it starts to feel more like parody than a love letter. Now despite the commitment to impersonating a Miyazaki movie Shinkai doesn't seem to understand why those movies even work, sure it has pretty looking food and stunningly detailed backgrounds but there's no heart, there are no characters, not a single earned emotional beat. Who is this even for?
