This movie is at once a black metal gorefest and a haunting exploration of revenge and grief. There are so many things to love here: Nicolas Cage unleashed in a role that lets him explore full-on mania, gorgeous fantasy animations, trippy visual effects, and a soundtrack that completes the movie’s otherworldly vibe. I never quite understood the story’s world, but that kept it mysterious.
I think this is my new favorite movie, though that maybe says more about me than the movie.

Picnic at Hanging Rock 1975
This movie warrants revisiting multiple times, probably. Right now I’m thinking of it as a meditation on humanity’s anxiety of eventually disappearing into or surrendering to the chaos of nature. I also like the idea of women who normally inhabit regimented structures like boarding schools engaging with dangerous, wild environments.
