A truly exceptional film. I'm most struck by Pierre's slowness in combat - it comes across as methodical, planned and precisely brutal, something that I don't think I've ever felt in an action scene before. I like the ending. Saulnier films are always about people. They've mostly been about horrible people, capable of terrible violence. Here, Saulnier explores different parts of humanity. Denying us a big shootout doesn't lessen the thematic weight of the film, which has always shown our protag to be precise, cautious and proportionate in ways his opponents aren't.
