The Birdcage 1996
Homies rec from Al. Of course this movie was amazing, being led by the two titans of comedy and performance in Robin Williams and Nathan Lane. Gotta shoutout Gene Hackman as well, he has some amazing lines (“that’s exactly what Rush Limbaugh said” and “it’s the most intelligent show on TV”) which get big laughs. Super sweet ending as well, I was clapping in my lounge room. Only low for me is the character Val, who’s impossible to root for, but it also makes the commitment of their Mother and Father to his happiness that much sweeter.

The Seventh Seal 1957
Some people say this is the greatest movie ever made. I think the song about the movie, the Scott Walker one, is way better.

Roma 1972
Another year, another cohort of first year architecture students who have to watch this movie. They will be watching a 360p subtitled version on Canvas - I watched a 1080p dubbed version in the internet archive, which I think is a better decision due to the rich visual splendor of this film which I got to beam into my eyeballs. The thick Italian-American accents of the dub were quite alarming at times.
This movie is truly poetry of the screen, it’s fantastic, vibrant filmmaking from one of the absolute GOATs. Definitely one of the greatest films ever made about the ‘city’

Step Brothers 2008
In this movie Will Ferrell and John C Reilly play two men whose emotional needs were so neglected as children that they become intellectually disabled adults. It’s an excruciating watch because they contain not even a semblance of humanity or meaning. The other characters are also caricatures of human beings, but at least they’re funny!
If you love beautiful mature women however, this is a 10
