  There are no prizes for calling Saoirse Ronan a generational talent any more, but holy shit! She is remarkable in this. A powerful portrait of alcoholism and listlessness that, like its lead, holds no punches. It features some of the most devastating depictions of someone hitting rock bottom I can remember. It could have been tighter, wandering a little too far into being a Visit Orkney ad at times, but for Ronan's performance alone this is worth a watch.

  Gorgeous, weird, mesmerising and so much more than I expected.

  I went in expecting a classic good versus evil fairy tale (my bad, I've only just started working my way through Miyazaki's work) but Princess Mononoke actively works against that dichotomy. Instead it's about how good and bad manifests in a cast of characters capable of both, and a hero that fights for harmony rather than a "side" in a battle which nobody can win. Just incredible.
