  Extraordinarily beautiful, both in cinematography and the way it handles the nebulous, uncertain waters of gender nonconformity. A cheaper, less honest film would make Mark’s journey a straightforward one, with one gender role or another being the clear answer, and especially making Hana’s femininity more exaggerated. But Sworn Virgin doesn’t do that, instead making it clear that both rural Albania and modern Italy have ideas about gender and performance that don’t quite fit, and how when you don’t see yourself in…
