Casting an aryan german as the protagonist and emotional victim of a neo-nazi attack was one of several mistakes that thwarted any potential tension this film had. Diane Kruger's performance paled in comparison to those in Foxtrot and A Fantastic Woman; two films that also take place in the aftermath of the death of a loved one — but with nuance. It ends with a scene that closer resembles a "punch more nazis"-style catharsis than the utter despair and morbid resolution of a childless widow.
An exploitative film that seems to take pleasure in the rapid unraveling of its characters' lives. Allison Janney is the only saving grace, a highlight reel of her interviews would suffice. The constant breaking of the fourth wall doesn't lend the film any credulity, but instead reminds the audience that this is a crass money-making grab meant to relitigate painful memories of real people.
