Organised-crime-as-Capitalism's-shadow has been done to death and in Killing Them Softly the theme is made overt from the outset. The film would have lost nothing from leaving out the newsreels related to the 2008 financial crash and instead crediting the audience with being able to pick it out themselves.
That aside, this was both a good film and a great movie.
The visual effects and editing are experimental used well.
Pitt and Gandolfini look old and bring real weight to their roles. Mendelsohn is barely recognisable from Dark Knight Rises. All the characters are thoroughly nonredeemable but fascinating with killer monologues.
