Mickey 17 2025
Weird! Over-the-top! Lonely and cold, but quickly ramps up into this downward spiral slapstick action comedy satire thing. What Happened, Miss Simone? 2015
Competently made. Interviewees aren’t too intrusive, I always prefer documentaries that lean on archival material. Even if it dips into slideshow territory and concert montage a lot.
Confused by the creative decision to let Andy Stroud narrate away about Nina Simone’s genius from a 2006 interview, even after it covers his abuse. I suppose he’s a primary source, but still. Simone’s daughter even likens him to Puff Daddy, which was in poor taste in 2015, and in even poorer taste today!

Two Distant Strangers 2020
weird, exploitative, corny dogshit. and i never really trip over depictions of “black trauma porn”, or whatever term more cynical people than me use to describe this media. but this is actually awful. the fact that this could nab an oscar nomination just tells me how desperate the academy is to seek out minority representation and become inclusive, no matter the quality of the work. if this is the film that convinces you to care about black lives in america, we’re all doomed.
