This was a rapt as I've been in a theater in some time. There isn't a single predictable rhythm about this. And this is how you use gory violence without seeming like a creep as a filmmaker. Saulnier makes the violence real because it makes us feel the real consequence of violence. And this also isn't just an exercise of putting an audience through a wringer. There are some light moments and moments of hope in here.
