What I love about this film is how a character who at first comes off as mostly harmless, if annoying, gradually reveals himself to be a massive POS. Not sure if the background unfolding of the 2016 election did much for me. I’m sure there’s some sort of parallel narrative thing about how predators get away with it but I’m not sure it works. Acting was great and there were a lot of laughs, even if the audience I watched with was very uncomfortable with the subject matter
Hits all the gothic notes you want it to. Eggers’s signature attention to historic detail endures. Costume design on Orlok was awesome. Willem Dafoe undefeated. Not really a whole lot of profound social commentary going on here but I also don’t think that’s what Eggers was going for

Got to this film because of movie mindset, the podcast that is singlehandedly making me rethink my stance on movies from before 1970.
Loved this movie more than I thought I would. The intrigue and the acting kept me in it the whole time. Can't wait for Sunset Blvd later this week.
A brutally hard watch and worthy of the title of an American epic. I was aware of this film only from the infamous Russian roulette scene, but I did not know it would play such a central role in the film. Cimino excels in crafting long scenes that are visually striking and narratively effective.
The politics of the movie are somewhat opaque, though I suppose that is appropriate for a Vietnam film. One could uncharitably call this a "shoot and…
