I could go on and on forever about the subtext and themes contained within this masterpiece, but for now I’ll just point out what I noticed on this (3rd) watch:
- In the first half of the movie, the basement staircase is only shown on screen when a member of the family is having doubts about their place / class / role.
- The tonal shift in the movie doesn’t occur when the former housekeeper rings the doorbell, it happens…Translated from by
