Man people really expect a CHILDREN’S film, meant to help other kids begin to grasp the incredibly complicated topics of racism, immigration and xenophobia (and how love can conquer them all), to somehow encapsulate all the intricate complexities of racial inequality including a comprehensive rendition of historical atrocities WHILE telling a unique story kids will love… in under like two hours. James Cameron was right, if it’s not taking place *underwater*, it won’t look *underwater*.
Other than Sebastian’s terribly forced accent - it’s a decent remake that’s true to its source material with even better storytelling. The motives are actually real and the relationships finally make sense, although I will definitely miss the iconic “bUt dAdDy i lOvE HiM!”.
Some technical hiccups (of many):
- Each one of triton’s kids is a different ethnicity (so he be fkin for real) but…
The fact so many pretentious (and likely fellators of cishet white male coming-of-age garbage) find this movie and it’s metaphors “too surface level” (completely bypassing all deeper interpersonal and social commentary) - after likely also just arguing the reason they like Fight Club is WAY deeper than all the other guys you’ve dated - should tell you that this movie is worth it’s weight. (Ha)
